The short answer is yes, if the system is running Linux or Macos and has a processor with an x86/x64 instruction set.
The longer and slightly disappointing longer answer is, yes but you probably shouldn’t because the most important characteristic of a mining setup is a high Hash Rate combined with low energy consumption or “processing efficiency”. And since GPU’s can achieve much higher Hash Rates than a CPU’s alone (at least for Ethash) a GPU is generally the way to go.
The short answer is yes, if the system is running Linux or Macos and has a processor with an x86/x64 instruction set, if your laptop or gaming system has a powerful GPU then even better.
However note that its common to leave mining system running 24/7 in order to “mine” the most CPH (Cypherium) And that a typical laptop (especially the sleek ones) has limited cooling headroom and mining is quite intensive so a laptop can get quite hot and will eventually start throttling (lowering clock speeds thus limiting its hashing performance) in order to protect itself and cool down, so using a laptop for mining is probably not something that is ideal.
A well cooled gaming system (usually having a powerful GPU sometimes even GPUs) is more suitable since there is more cooling headroom.
The ideal setup consists out of a dedicated mining “rig” that’s usually nothing more than a simple tube frame (open air) that holds one or more power supplies, a motherboard with simple processor and a couple of Video cards (GPU’s) linked to the motherboard with simple USB Risers (to perform its mining task it doesn’t need a 8x or 16x PCIe connection)
Hash Rate is the number of hashes a computing unit (usually a CPU/GPU/ASIC) can perform per time unit for a specific algorithm.
For example, the AMD 6600XT video card has a typical Hash Rate of 28MH/s for Ethash
so it can perform around 28 million hashes per second.
Cypherium is designed to solve the blockchain trilemma (being the tradeoff between speed, security and decentralization)
and does so by implementing a dual chain architecture where PoW is used to mine new key blocks and the Hotstuff Consensus mechanism for transactions (in a separate chain)
this enables Cypherium to process several thousand transactions per second.
The main reasons for using PoW instead of PoS are:
1. PoW enables true decentralization.
2. PoS can’t guarantee true decentralization like PoW since major players (whales) are able to acquire large quantities (thus control) and will be rewarded with even more passive income.
3. PoS needs more time to verify transactions.
4. PoS has drawn the attention of financial regulatory institutions that might classify PoS as a security.
Even though Cypherium (partially) uses PoW it is much more energy efficient than Bitcoin due to its incredibly high transaction speed (much more transactions per watt)
The first part “Cypher” refers to encryption and the second part “ium” refers to elements as found on the periodic table.
Cypherium has a fixed size validator pool of 21 nodes (committee members), each node (miner) running the Cypherium miner is eligible to become part of the committee after successfully completing a PoW challenge.
– A committee member will be rewarded for transactions and mined blocks.
– Committee membership rotates so each miner gets a chance to become a committee member.
The Vison of Cypherium is to:
1. Become the instant ledger of choice by enabling real-time transactions for billions of users.
2. Become the smart contract platform of choice to enable enterprise use cases for all industries.
3. Become a trusted database to connect isolated data islands around the world.
4. Be an open network to enfranchise any participant or contributor.
5. Be a secure vault to combat the increasing threats to data privacy.
